I think making it a landmark representative of a country is had, because then how do you determine "representative" but I'm in complete agreement with Guy and Clare with the number of photos that are just fire and nothing that can be seen in the background.

yeah, but anyone can tell from your Yangshuo photos it's not just someone's random back garden and could probably find other photo's online to back up the location stated if there was any cause for doubt.

people are still adding non conforming pictures left right and centre, it's the thumbnail sized ones, with no visible location that really make me giggle, sooo useful for a calendar.

hmmm.. I'm having some problems uploading my picture. When I try to upload it it comes out as 80 per cent grey: any advice?

edit: got it sorted - just had to change the file name and reupload it

I think the competition organizers should do a bit more than gently reminding people of the guidelines. There's a lot of good fire photography submitted. But not many of them fill the "criteria". And what's the point of being able to vote for photos that atleast shouldn't end up in the calendar...?

I agree. So many photos are 'just' of fire & the background could be from anywhere - some are fantastic, but I would not evern consider them for a "poi around the WORLD" calendar...

Perhaps just delete the photos (with maybe a friendly reminder PM) that obviously have no place in a world calendar, and let everyone vote on their favourite pics like originally planned?

I also agree many people looking through pictures which have no relevance to the competition will get bored & miss out on pictures worth seeing...

Ok all - you have spoken!! You might have already noticed...
We discussed this today and agreed that we should "intervene" more than I had. So, the photo's that were "fire spinning only" with no visible "around the world" component have been removed and an e-mail sent to the submitters.

Lazy Angel, your fire one I left there although it's "marginal", you can see a pagoda.
Antti, the backstage one I did remove even though it was a nice shot in it's own right.

I guess there are a few other "marginal" ones there still too, but they are sufficiently not your average back-yard scenery that I let them stand.

thanks for the feedback.

Thank you for deleting my picture and others. (However it went well with the name of the competition since nobody goes around the world like the Cirque... ) The remaining selection of pics looks good.

thanks George! I wouldn't have moaned if you'd taken it out, that was the one I was getting at with the whole 'recognisable by someone who's been there' thing earlier.

Soo much happier now, Ta!

I'm pretty much cool with anything as long as there is actually a background scenery that's a place, not necessarily recognisable specifically by us as X country, my geography, geology and knowledge of international flora and fauna is terrible ,just not simply someone's back yard (unless they live somewhere spectacular anyway (china, egypt, japan, etc))

Some of the mexico and barbados photo's for example I think are lush, but not specific places, or recognisable landmarks but very easily recognisable as somewhere beautiful, and out of the ordinary for most people.

It was just the ones with no visible background what so ever that annoyed me. Otherwise anything should be left for judgement, George and the HoP management are judges and should remove anything they legitimately feel unworthy by any of the stated rules without qualms, that is what the rules are there for after all.

Anyway, I'm not a judge this is just my opinion

This is personally my favourite photograph of them all as it really shows the spirit of sharing "Poi Around The World"
The look on the kid's face says it all and I love the tiny dog so I do hope it's included
