COL 2009

With only two months to go, was curious to know if anyone was entering?

Only two months?

Eeep.... I really want to enter this year. I saw last year's and I do not think that I am too far off the pace. We shall see.

Nowt from me this year, haven't been spinning much recently and have nothing new to offer.

I have mine all edited, I'm hoping to add some minor effects, and I'm still waiting for my brother to send me a mastered version of the song he gave me.

I only started thinking about it the other day but unsure if i will put anything in. Still need to source music and get a good cameraperson to film me, let alone get an idea of what to put together.

I wanted to, but my computer isn't really good enough to edit on, look forward to what everyone else puts out, however.

I really meant to but I've been overtaken by other things to organise. I WILL make one next year.

Well, I was going to, but life kinda said screw you a lot all at one time so I don't have the means to anymore.

I didn't get any time to get an entry even started. Life got kinda crazy...

I mailed mine last week, and can't wait to see what everyone else has done!

I got lucky and was able to put something together at the last minute. Sent it off yesterday.

i filmed mine last night and sent it out today, didnt hear about the contest till yesterday >.<

Mine and Rob's turned out ok in the end, wasnt sure as it was pretty rushed and last minute as usual but i think we are happy with it.

oooooh and I just saw one of the entries in a preview...

So, is it too late to submit a video? I found out about the competition two days ago. Not a lot of support for the Poi community where I live, so info travels slowly.

Yeah, the deadline was june 31st sadly.

...i'm still figuring out a way to get this dvd cheaply to the Philippines. too bad that HOP no longer allows postal service due to missing parcels. if i use courier service, i'd have to pay more than 4 times the price of the dvd! darn!

My 2 cents:

I loved watching this video. So many different and interesting ideas. I picked 5 favourites based on a)concept of video b) technique/flow c)costuming and background d)sticking to one prop - for some reason the videos that always resonate with me are when only one prop is used instead of jumping between differeint ones (eg staff to poi to staff etc)


Fave 5 (n no particular order):

Everyone is Happy - I'm not even a staff spinner and I loved this video. I thought the setting was great and I loved how the spinning went with the music. The whole concept of the video was fun. Really it was over to quickly for me!

Loooop - I've enjoyed watching some of your other videos aswell. You guys have a great style and flow together. The way this one was shot and with the music it was almost like I was watching a tango between 3 people.

M32.2 - Very cool video. It was very well thought out and I loved seeing two people spin in suits You guys had some moments of perfect synchronicity - awesome. I loved the drawing editing thing too.

Encyclo-Poi-dia - I liked this video alot. Less from a performance aspect and more from a learning aspect. I loved hearing your ideas and visions for poi. Shooting in such a dynamic space aswell I felt really added to what you were saying. I will definetly be watching this one again to see what else I pick up on the second time.

Will Kim Jong-un Wear a Jumpsuit? - Obviously I love partner poi I thought you guys were great. You had a nice flow and nice technique and obviously ALOT of chemistry The only thing that makes me hesitate to put you here was the lack of costuming.


Honorable mentions:

Hilltop spin: absolutely the cutest beginning to a video ever!

Hisui: that lift at the begining was beautiful and I loved the attention to symmety in many of your shots.


Videos that had something special that jumped out at me:

Witches Sabbath - The scenes with the fans were just beautiful. I wish I could've been there to watch you make this video.

MCP - the section where you mimicked what you did with the small staff with the big staffs was really cool. As was the shot from overhead of you doing that matrix type move.


Anyways that is just my opinion and really I thought everyone did a great job and I will definetly be watching a few again to dissect some trix.

Hmmm. SO my first day back in Oz will include a long swim, watching Kyle's copy of COL and going to a hardcore ninja circus show. Sounds like a good day! Will post extensive and informed opinions at my leisure

Hisui, Greg and Margaret, Rob and Sandy, MCP, and Pyrodynamics (and myself :P)

Some real' badass stuff on the video, for sure. I love all the partner poi stuff. Looks great!

Alien Jon, hands down, fried my brain. MCP was great, as always.

Lots of other great ones in there. Woo hoo!

Really liked poiboy, Rob and Sandy, Kyle.

Lots of staff this year, which was interesting.
