Tesla Coil Fun

Last night I went around to my friends "power up" of his newly made tesla coil.

Here's a picture I took. Sparks were 1m long when running at half power.


It got me thinking about how it could be used to great effect with poi or staff twirling.

Andy Lau used one in his "Wonderful World" tour to great success.

Need big Tesla Coil, Chain Mail suit, know how, and guts

I reckon it'd be pretty cool to be spinning staff or poi and "catching" lightning with it... haha, but yeah. This is a pretty cool idea, I'd like to see what some people come up with for this concept.

Maybe 'Tesla Coil' should have an automatic warning link like Fire Breathing They are SERIOUSLY dangerous! They are definitely not toys.

On the technical side of things... someone on my course at uni made one this year. Only a small one but it is possible to scale it up. I wouldn't attempt to build one without a LOT of research and preferably a very good engineer or a physicist to deal with the calculations / design elements. If you are going to build one you need to know exactly how it will behave before you start (especially if you want to use it for a show).

I would love to make a usb powered tesla coil. Just because.

Also, much lower power. No idea if it is possible though.

I saw this in one of the fire shows at Glastonbury, its soo amazing and I relly want to get into this, but again, would want an engineer who knew what they were doing and know all the risks myself, and be trained in what to do in all cases!!

The little Tesla coil is in Christchurch. I think a much larger one is needed or perhaps a vandergraph generator?

I've never had much success with Van De Graff generators tbh, they're temperamental prats IMO.

Plus, it's only static, so you've gotta wait for quite a while whilst they build up a charge... As opposed to a bigger Tesla, which can just draw the current right off.
